New insights into the role of oral microbiota dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease

This review summarizes specific oral bacteria that may serve as new manipulators of inflammation in IBD. Thus, new therapeutic approaches targeting the oral microbiota by facilitating beneficial bacteria and eliminating pathogenic oral bacteria may be an innovative medical strategy to prevent the recurrence of IBD

  • Strong connection exists between dysbiosis of oral microbiota and development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
  • Overabundances of oral commensal bacteria with opportunistic pathogenicity reported in the gut microbiota of IBD patients.
