In the treatment of epilepsy, the prescription of newer anti-seizure medications has markedly increased during the last decade. However, the recent findings are potentially concerning and awaiting comparative, randomized, head-to-head trial directly comparing the new drug with an old drug in the routine use.

The treatment of epilepsy extends far beyond seizure control. Many comorbidities have a significant impact on the medical management and quality of life of patients with epilepsy. Management strategies employed in the outpatient clinic to maximize overall health outcomes should include screening and treatment for the commonly coexistent conditions in persons with epilepsy.

In this series, we have invited 4 professional speakers who are the leading experts in epilepsy to present the “Challenging Cases Series”. We believe that you perhaps see some clues from patients to which we may can unravel mysteries of epilepsy.

To present evidence from the literature on the rates, underlying causes and consequences of the misdiagnosis of epilepsy and place these meaningfully within a practical framework of risk appraisal and managed diagnostic uncertainty towards informing a clinical practice that might make misdiagnosis less likely.

Speed is of the essence in treatment of SE. Based on current evidence, benzodiazepine remain first choice for initial treatment of SE. While intravenous of the anti-seizure medications may be preferable in the majority of benzodiazepine-resistant patients on current evidence of established SE.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is an important direct epilepsy-related cause of death. Mortality rate in children with epilepsy remains 5-10 times greater than adults. Identifying patients at risk, well classification, attaining seizure control with AED are potential ways of reducing SUDEP-related mortality.
